Cleaning Your Carpets with Vinegar
Unfortunately when you have carpets in your home it's almost inevitable that you will have to deal with stains at one point or another. Carpet stains are always a hassle to get out. Carpet cleaning with vinegar can be a very effective (and cheap!) solution. Once you recover from the shock of having red wine spilled onto your brand new white carpet run, don't walk, to your pantry and grab your bottle of white distilled vinegar. As with all stains, it is important to get at them as soon as possible before they set in. To remove a stain from your carpet simply mix up a solution of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water into a clean spray bottle. Before applying the vinegar solution make sure to blot the stain with a paper towel or cleaning rag to soak up excess wine, juice, or whatever substance is causing the stain. It is also important to test out the vinegar on a small unnoticeable area of your carpet to ensure that the vinegar will not cause discoloration. Be careful not to apply more of the solution than you need, as you don't want to have it soak into the underside of the carpet. Once applied let the vinegar solution sit on the stain for a little while, and then wipe with paper towers, and there you have it: A clean carpet without the use of harmful chemicals. If a stain is especially resilient you can leave the vinegar solution on the stain for several hours with paper towers on top, and then weighted down with a heavy object. This is will give the vinegar more time to extract the stain causing substance from the carpet. You are done the smell of vinegar should go away after it evaporates.
